Since two are presently undergoing modernization, two are operational at the moment. The titanium pressure hull of the Sierra class gives it its unique appearance. The submarines in this class can dive deeper, emit less noise, and are more resistant to torpedo attacks because of their lightweight, sturdy hulls.
